| Dinner Party menu? |
[17 Nov 2009|03:14pm] |
I'm having a vegan dinner party this week. Really looking forward to it :)
Current menu:
salad: lettuces, herbs, broad beans (all from the garden) with avocado and dressing
falafels
dahl
quinoa tabouli
Dessert: choc beetroot pudding and soy icecream
I need another 'main' kinda dish that is wheat free. Any ideas what would balance my menu? It's summer pretty much here :) thanks Cate

| Turning my co-workers vegan (or at least exposing them to it :) |
[16 Nov 2009|06:55pm] |
So at work a little while ago we started this bring treats into work on Fridays thing. We rotate who brings in the treats every week and you bring enough for everyone. Usually I cannot eat them, which is fine I really don't need more sweets :) There is one person who tries to make things I can eat also which is nice, and another who keeps asking me how to veganize her recipes so I can eat them as well. Well the first week I volunteered and made chocolate chip cookies because I found an amazing recipe just prior. So everyone LOVED them and had all kinds of questions on how to cook without eggs and such (nice questions as they were actually curious - no one else in my office, at least in my department, is even vegetarian) so I was telling them things you could use and answering their questions about veganism. And word got out that there were vegan cookies in accounting so people from other departments came to try them out - they were all skeptical like I don't know about this, but then they tried them and were like wow - these are the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had!
So then it has been awhile and no one had signed up for last week so I did since I found an amazing brownie recipe that actually turns out like brownies should - eewey gooey (not super oily or cakey)! So I brought them in last Friday and again people loved them! There is one girl who never partakes in the sweets as she is very strict about limiting them, but she tried a crumb (because crumbs don't count....). Then every time I looked up she was taking more and more brownie! They must have been good if she was eating so much of them! And everyone was like 'can you send me the recipe. These are so good!' So yey! And then at the end of the day the girl who doesn't eat sweets said "You should cook vegan food for us every day. Turn us all vegan" :) Slowly but surely I am winning over my co-worker with vegan treats!
( Edited to add recipes (since a few people asked for them :) )

Just wondering if anyone else eating vegan is also receiving treatment for an underactive thyroid? I get tired alot from this condition and i find I feel quite unwell if I have too much junky food (chips etc). Any thing I should know? thanks Cate

| cookbooks! |
[15 Nov 2009|02:05pm] |
i love to cook. love love love! i already have a lot of cookbooks, but i figured that there wouldn't be any harm in asking for some more for christmas. i'll be moving out soon and i can't wait to have a tiny library in my tiny kitchen. :p
i've been using amazon as a reference for cookbooks just by searching "vegan cookbook" and then reading through the reviews, but i would love more recommendations! i'm sure there are lots of hidden gems out there. i should also add that i like playing with raw recipes, so long as they're not too tedious. so please recommend other cookbooks i should look into, or give me your feedback on cookbooks that are on my wishlist if you already own them! thanks! :)
( on to my list! )

| John Safran Foer on NPR |
[15 Nov 2009|07:18pm] |
http://www.onpointradio.org/2009/11/eating-animals
One of my favorite shows (you can listen to the mp3 of it on that link) had John Safran Foer who wrote "Eating Animals". It is pretty much an animal welfarist point of view and I realize there are a lot of people who don't agree with that point of view but I still found it really interesting.
I, for one, am really torn about the animal welfarist point of view, but I have been leaning towards it lately. This mainly comes from the fact that I have been hanging out with a lot less veg*ns now that I live in Europe (moved here from the states) and I am realizing the reality that there is such a majority of people who really don't want to make the shift even to vegetarianism. I would love for the majority to go vegan, but I see this is a less cruel, but more realistic solution.

| Sexuality Textbook Info |
[15 Nov 2009|10:18am] |
Here are some excerpts from my "Human Sexuality" textbook I found interesting and relavent to vegans:
"Researchers believe that morning sickness may protect the fetus from food-borne illness and chemicals in certain foods during the first trimester... The lowest rates of morning sickness are found in cultures without animal products as a food staple. Some women develop food aversions, the most common of which are to meat, fish, poultry, and eggs -- all foods that can carry harmful bacteria"
*It's like the body is saying THIS IS NOT FOOD! HOW DARE YOU.
"During the second trimester, an average-weight woman is advised to increase her caloric intake by 300 calories per day, and protein requirements increase. For vegetarians and vegans, it is necessary to increase consumption of vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds and also to include a protein supplement to ensure adequate protein intake."
* I just think it's awesome they address the idea that meat/ animal byproducts is totally uneccessary during pregnancy.
"...miscarriage may be caused by... excessive vitamin A"
*Just a note I found interesting since I consume A LOT of veggie juice and greens high in vit A.
